Harrison MacWhite, the U.S. ambassador to the troubled Southeast Asian country of Sarkhan, works to stop the northern Communists from taking over the struggling democracy in the south. He focuses on keeping a key road open to the remote interior. From the moment he arrives, however, he faces suspicion and hostility, even from a well-known freedom fighter, now suspected of being a Communist agent.
