Once a wealthy piano major, Ji-soo now scrapes by on odd jobs to support herself and her middle-school son. One hectic day, she gets shattering news from her son Yeong-min's school-as Jae-hyun, back from four years in prison, hears from his son Jun-seo's school too.

Snowed in together, Ji-soo pretends to have forgotten Jae-hyun, yet 1993-her bold pursuit of the boy who loved music and poetry-stays vivid for both. Aching at how worn she looks now, Jae-hyun hurts all the more seeing where she has ended up.

Old pain lingers as trauma, but Ji-soo endures because Jae-hyun is near. Rumors spread to Jun-seo and Yeong-min, who fight; she respects Yeong-min's refusal of the school's punishment. Asked if he's tied to a union member's suicide, Jae-hyun tells her of his father's death.

Knowing the pain of sudden loss, the two understand each other deeply. Worried after Ji-soo loses her tutoring job, Jae-hyun stumbles trying to help. A lucid Hyeong-gu secretly summons him as Chairman Jang, aware of the old feud, attacks harder. In 1996, army-bound Jae-hyun hears devastating news.

In Hyeong-gu's belongings, Ji-soo finds a diary revealing his past sins and true remorse toward her. Jae-hyun demands a divorce; Seo-gyeong needles her guilt, then confesses her own wrongs to ease it. Ji-soo chooses to stay by him-they kiss. Moved to the country, she weeps at his radio message.

Caught between an elusive landlord and demolition crews, Ji-soo is cornered. Bringing the ailing Ji-soo to a hospital, Jae-hyun resolves to stay by her. Filing for divorce, he leaves home as Seo-gyeong lashes out at those around Ji-soo. Pushed too far, Ji-soo heads to his hotel to spite Seo-gyeong.

Seo-gyeong storms the hotel, but the affair she imagined never happens. Learning his father's case from Hyeong-gu's notebook, Jae-hyun seeks the old prosecutor. He and Ji-soo clash over Seon-hui's dismissal. Choosing Ji-soo over Hyeongseong, Jae-hyun is struck down by Elder Gwon on his way to her.

Hearing of the attack, Chairman Jang readies a counterstrike. Elder Gwon begs Se-hun for help but is coldly refused. Ji-soo grows certain Se-hun was behind it. Even near death, the two care for each other, deeply shaking Seo-gyeong. In 1995, Ji-soo rushes to the ER on hearing Jae-hyun is hurt.

Ji-soo understands Seo-gyeong but refuses her plea. Before the general meeting, Jae-hyun makes a bold offer, and the union backs him with small but decisive shares. Jang is arrested for corruption; Jae-hyun asks leniency even for his foes. Divorced, he starts a new family with Ji-soo.
