The film follows Dr. Kyojo Niide, or Red Beard, a compassionate physician who runs a charity clinic in Edo. A young, arrogant medical student, Yasumoto, begins working under Red Beard, initially disdainful of the clinic's mission. As he witnesses the hardships of the patients, his perspective shifts, and he becomes more empathetic.
